"MUSIC FOR LIMINAL TIMES" - ALBUM

My current artistic practice encompasses collage art, photography, film and sound art, often using elements of performance. I mostly work with found imagery and found sounds. The objectified self is contrasted with the subjectivity of emotional truth. I aim to raise questions to do with imprisonment inside the body and mind, identity, connection, social adaptation and the survival of the spiritual self.

My work explores the relationship between the collective and the individual consciousness. I’m interested in the big questions in life, as I have no interest in engaging with trivial matters. How do we retain a true and honest sense of self in the face of peer pressure and social discrimination? How do you overcome the shame that comes from marginalisation? How do we reconcile with our need for approval and the sense of belonging? And finally - how do we live life and face illness, bodily decay and mortality in the best possible way?

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

I'm Vivi-Mari Carpelan, a Finnish-Swedish artist resident in Wales, U.K. since 2010, and married to visual artist Martin Herbert. I have practised art since 1991, always interested in the deeper layers of the human mind and spirit and devoted to the use of symbols in my art.

This blog is about my artistic processes and my efforts to fit in with a society mostly designed for the healthy and wealthy, but it's also about surviving as an artist couple and how my husband and I experience the art world today. The chaotic, whimsical and often contradictory and unjust world of art and the stirrings within it often seem to us like storms in a tea cup! When are our efforts going to drown in this cup, or will they take off and fly? How can we become less dependent on the putrid art market?

But of course, I also love tea and tea cups, the symbols of relaxation and a good time, and feel right at home in Great Britain!

Afflicted with a spinal condition since childhood, I have gradually come to realize that keeping up with the pace of normal life in this time and age is impossible for me. I continue to create because I can't help it and have no other worthwhile pursuits. For health reasons, I gave up drawing and painting and became a mixed media collage artist. However, in recent years my relationship with another artistic person has inspired me to branch out and embrace many other media (photography, film and music/sound).

Through my art, I express the idea that imperfection is human, whereas a glossy and sanitized world runs counter to our natural inclinations and humanness. Human imperfection is something that those who represent the norms of society need to tackle. I speak for everyone out there who has had to concede that they are disabled in comparison with most people who are able to participate actively in society. Not until society embraces its disabled organs, can it become whole.
