Those are very perceptive comments and I'm also grateful for your last words. How seldom we hear other artists' (and other creatives') voices in genuine, supportive dialogue - perhaps people are afraid of revealing their vulnerability, or have ingrained fears of rivalry of some sort... so many fears to do with physical and emotional survival foster insecurities and worries in regards to other people. I really don't know. However I do feel that it would be much, much better if we could put down our defences, unite and talk more honestly, as most of us are in a very similar boat! Artists used to do that, but what happened??

It actually took me years to admit I was an artist, i.e. driven to be creative within the arts. Then as years went by and I had matured into middle age I realised I couldn't even help being creative. I tried to put an end to my efforts to become a recognised artist but found that I had nothing else to do that would bring me self-satisfaction and that I couldn't stop myself from having creative thoughts and ideas. It's a blessing and a curse at the same time. I think it's a spiritual thing because creativity is inherent in nature and if we live naturally we will automatically be creative (as artists we just happen to make art but it could be any other pursuit). It's really a wonderful thing that should be celebrated. Our subconscious mind is an immense storehouse of ideas and I believe we must let it come out the way it wants to come out, and not question it. We will then express who we truly are. I find it helps a bit to try and believe that we all have great creative potential outside of our normal consciousness. I wrote some more about the quest for genuine art of the soul in a previous post here >http://vivi-mariandmartinart.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/on-quest-for-more-subjectivity-heart.html. Thank you so much for being in dialogue with me! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10279912682706845983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-690296768668535319.post-28571689517635248212014-05-08T02:13:48.747+01:002014-05-08T02:13:48.747+01:00Wow thank you for writing this Vivi-Mari, it's...Wow thank you for writing this Vivi-Mari, it's wonderful to hear another voice talking about this issue. You have encapsulated many of the fears, doubts and blocks I see in many creators of all kinds, not just artists but designers, writers and craftspeople too. I feel your struggle because I have felt it too and you raise many interesting points about the nature of success as an artist. I especially find interesting what you say about the goal and focus if we are not striving toward commercial success. I have found this in my own work, when coming back to the core of what I want to create sometimes it is not commercial but then there appears to be no explicit goal.

You also make some very interesting points about validation, and how we are to know if what we are producing is good or not without that external feedback. Many of these questions do not have definitive answers, but I can see the passion in your writing for your art and I know that regardless of your commercial success what you are doing is meaningful. I noticed one of my pieces was up on your Tumblr page, thanks, that was nice of you. In theory I like to be asked but you had put all the appropriate credits there so it's okay. The internet is the way it is ;-). If you go to my Facebook page, there are many albums there about my artwork but also my life, and pictures are also grouped on my website www.vivimaricarpelan.com - it's probably true that where I come from in Finland as well as where I live in Wales, U.K. is quite serene. I need it in order to survive at all... although I love the big cities I get easily stressed and it just doesn't work out - not mentioning the cost of living. Still I feel that compassion is lacking everywhere, and the rural areas aren't necessarily any better. I haven't really made any friends in Wales though we've lived there for two years now. But we keep hoping that we'll find the perfect place one day, at least in terms of cosiness - especially a house that would be in better shape than ours and a lot of surrounding nature where the cats can roam without getting run over!! I was a bit sad to take them away from the forest in Finland but Beatrice, the girl cat, is thrilled to have an extended territory as our Welsh house is quite big!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10279912682706845983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-690296768668535319.post-11489999672761952832012-07-30T14:35:30.595+01:002012-07-30T14:35:30.595+01:0007/30/2012 I've just started looking at your a...07/30/2012 I've just started looking at your art and came across your cats section and read about Marius' accident and was just so thrilled to find out he's on the mend. I live with my 2 teenagers and we have a cat named Snickers. We would die if something happened to him and the main worry is money. I barely make it each month as I am a single mother so when you say you are so sick of being poor I can relate to you so well. Where you live looks so serene and isolated (by the few photos you have up). It is the complete opposite of how we live here in USA. Super fast paced, everyone going no where with no manners, no compassion for their fellow man, and morals at an all time low. it's disturbing. I have a tumblr account, if you'd like you can visit. Thank you for your time and sharing your art. You look like a wonderful couple (your husband and yourself) and I hope you are feeling well. my tumblr is http://red-lipstick.tumblr.com/red_lipstickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04062636116397588018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-690296768668535319.post-86214284228228978032012-07-22T12:33:50.296+01:002012-07-22T12:33:50.296+01:00Hello and thank you so much for leaving a message!...Hello and thank you so much for leaving a message! I didn't study fine arts myself, I studied other art related subjects. One reason could have been that I felt intuitively that it wouldn't get me anywhere "real". The first being that conceptual art was not brought on by artists but by art institutions, the second being art education, art instructors today tell students that art should do all these things that you talk about here, and also tell their students that once you have made it there is no need to concern yourself with making great art, just do what sells. In order to change what is going on in the art world we are going to have to first fix the art education of today.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-690296768668535319.post-57284039520118070752012-03-03T16:20:15.961+00:002012-03-03T16:20:15.961+00:00Hi Joann and thank you for commenting! How are you going about having someone else take care of selling your art? Surely it costs money. I don't have the luxury of paying anyone upfront for anything. But I will just have to try and avoid putting myself out there too much, especially where the going is rough, even if it means less opportunity... my health is not up to it, unfortunately. I can relate about promoting yourself. It is so difficult because creating is soul work. When others tell us our soul work is not accepted it is crushing. I do actually agree with you, for all sorts of reasons and a high degree of sensitivity I have had a deep crisis about my art. I only came to this country a year and a half ago, and find it very harsh. I think I will, however, continue creating but putting less of myself out there is terms of promotion. It's taking a huge toll on me as you seem to have picked up on. You are however saying there are professionals who could help, but where are they?? My husband is an artist too, quite on the ball, but he doesn't know either. We would love to know how to do this. We also have no money to spare, so it would have to be someone who worked on commission. Please share if you know where one is supposed to start looking! I would be very grateful. If I may suggest, your best strategy for moving forward is to focus on your art and don't attempt to anticipate what catagory your work fits into. Just place your focus on perfecting your art and hire a public relations director and/or art rep to handle all of the submissions and promotions of your career. This takes the burden of the art business world off your shoulders and onto someone who can do what needs to be done to get you to where you what to go in your career.
Don't waste energy on trying to figure out where the art elite who make decisons about artists careers, are coming from or how they make their decisions. You get and stay positive and let a trained professional handle the art business elite.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06503902617367102466noreply@blogger.com
